Below image contains the complete details.

MOC Lab Syllabus - for First Semester Diploma Civil Engineering Students

INTRODUCTION

MOC lab is being introduced to first semester diploma civil engineering students for the first time. This lab deals with the study of construction materials mainly focusing on its identification ,composition ,properties and its uses. Though it is a simple lab but it proves to be difficult to students as it is very descriptive in nature and also to study plenty of materials .It covers all the varities of building materials which are used in construction, Therefore an attempt is being made to 1 st semester civil diploma students just to identify the material and also to know the engg properties and its uses in a simple approach .This lab benefits to the students to acquire practical knowledge about the construction materials .It emphasis on contemporary usage of materials to suit to the local conditions .The type of material to be used in different civil engg works depends on its properties so that it can withstand the various types of loads coming over it .No field of engg which does not require the use of building materials and therefore the industry of building materials plays a vital role to enhance national economy .MOC lab is the application of building material knowledge to design civil engg structures which are useful to mankind

Necessity or Objectives :

1.It is necessary for civil engineers to become conversant and familiar with the engg properties and its uses of the building materials.
2.To know the grouping and classification of materials based on specific properties .
3.To know the application and to select the suitable material for specific purpose.
4.Engg structures are composed of materials and hence it is essential to know the knowledge of building materials .
5.To choose the material for low cost houses.
6.To acquire the knowledge about the sources ,availability, quantity and quality aspects of the materials .
7.To know the composition of the materials.
8.To impose standardization to material manufacturing industries to produce strong ,cheap and environment friendly building materials.
9.To undertake innovations and research work on building materials .
10.There are many alternative materials available in the market ,the final choice is made by considering the engg properties favorable to local condition and economy.
11.To make the students to understand thesubject materials of construction theory easily.

ENGINEERING PROPERTIES:

1.Physical properties
2.Chemical properties
3.Mechanical and thermal properties
4.Electrical and magnetic properties
5.Optical properties

Definitions of the following properties to be taught in the lab:

1.Physical properties of building materials: Bulk density,Specific gravity, water absorption water permeability, water resistance ,hygroscopicity, fire resistance, frost resistance ,refractorness, durability ,weathering etc.
2.Mechanical Properties : Strength,elasticity,plasticity,rigidity,ductility,malleability,toughness,hardness,softness, brittleness,fatigue,creep etc.
3.Chemical Properties: Chemical resistance ,corrosion etc.

Meanings of the following terms to be taught in the lab:

1.Stones: Minerals,crystalline structure ,stratified,unstratified,cleavage plane, disintegrate, hard,brittle,durable,glossy,lustre,pores,tough,soft,wear and tear,abrasion ,compact,dense,porosity,rigid,texture,fracture,fissures,quarry sap,seasoning ,grain size,crushing strength ,dressing ,etc.
2.Bricks:Cracking,warping,shrinking,plasticity,hardness,brittle,weathering,blending,tempering, frog,soundness,water absorption,efflorescence,etc.

Aggregates:Angular,sharp,coarse,fine,inert,well graded,bulking of sand ,flaky ,etc .
Concrete:Workability,water cement ratio,segregation and bleeding .

SCHEME OF EVALUATION

(Total no of students in one batch for end examination should not exceed 20)
Total no of materials to be given for each student:8 nos (one material from each unit).
Identification: 1 mark X 8 = 8 marks
Properties : 2 marks X 8 =16 marks (four properties in each material)
Uses: 2 marks X 8 =16 marks ( two uses in each material)
Oral:( Any five definitions of engg properties ) : 5 marks
Written question: (Any one from the following model questions):5 marks
 Total marks:50 marks

Model questions

1.Explain the various ways in which this lab is useful to civil engineers
2.Explain the importance of engg properties
3.Enlist the physical and mechanical properties of the building materials
4.Explain the qualities of a good building stone .
5.Explain the qualities of a good brick .
6.Explain the qualities of a good timber.
7.Explain the characteristics of an ideal paint or varnish.
8.Explain the properties of distemper.
9.Explain the qualities of good aggregates.

Note:

1.Whatever the construction material available in the locality may be procured and collected (just a sample or a specimen) whether it is included in the syllabus or not .
2.Doubts regarding procurement and identification of rocks can be clarified by a geology lecturer
3. Assign one unit for each group (6 students in each group), each student has to prepare a mini report on one building material of the unit assigned to the group which carries 5 marks.
4.High cost material sample should be arranged by the institution .
5.Colour pictures or images of the materials downloaded from the internet is to be pasted in the lab record.
6.Introduction,necessities,definitions of physical properties and mechanicalproperties ,properties and uses of the material which are mentioned in the syllabus to be written in the lab record .
